Since POSCO announced the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050, we have been making various efforts as a corporate citizen to carry this out, going beyond our role as a corporation. We plan to optimize the low-carbon solutions already in use to reduce carbon emissions, gradually apply low-carbon technologies, and ultimately implement a carbon-neutral iron manufacturing process based on hydrogen reduction and renewable energy.

Marine afforestation

POSCO has been carrying out a marine afforestation project to create a marine environment using steel for the past ten years. Triton fish reefs, made from slag (a byproduct of steel), are used to boost the growth of marine plants and are playing a major role in saving the oceans, which are undergoing desertification. Triton is a fish reef brand created from POSCO's steel slag. Triton was approved for use as a general fish reef by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in 2014, and it has been used in national marine afforestation projects.

Clean Ocean

Considering that the steelmaking industry is located close to the ocean and the talents of the executives and employees, we established the Clean Ocean Volunteer Group in 2009. It is composed of executives and employees of the POSCO Group. It has taken the lead in marine ecosystem restoration and marine biodiversity by collecting marine waste, starfish, etc., in the oceans of each region where POSCO and affiliated businesses are located (Pohang, Gwangyang, Seoul, Incheon, etc.) together with about 150 members. Notably, the Clean Ocean Volunteer Group received the 10th Presidential Commendation Award in March 2021 by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security through a system in which government awards the prize after public review when the public recommends hidden neighbors in our society.

Operation of eco-friendly vehicles in steel mills

POSCO will gradually replace about 1,500 vehicles in the Pohang and Gwangyang steel mills with Hyundai's pollution-free hydrogen-electric vehicles. POSCO plans to use the byproduct hydrogen produced in the steel mill as the energy source for hydrogen trucks.

Carbon reduction activities in the daily lives of executives and employees

To realize carbon neutrality, POSCO is carrying out activities that its executives and employees take part in. At the company level, we are planning a gradual shift to the use of eco-friendly shared cars. We are also planning CO₂ reduction idea contests that can create a social impact. In addition, we have issued stainless steel tumblers to all executives and employees and made sure that POSCO Centers and other major businesses do not use single-use cups. In particular, we have been running a "My Little Challenge" program since April 2021, in which executives and employees set small but meaningful goals such as using public transportation and certify their actions through a mobile app.
